THE Federal Court has increased a fine against a building company from $1200 to $20,000, after an appeal by the Australian Building and Construction Commission.
The ABCC had told the court the original penalty awarded against Hutchinson Builders by the Federal Circuit Court, for contravening strike pay provisions in the Fair Work Act, was manifestly inadequate.
The building company had made payments to 10 workers who took part in unlawful industrial action.
The penalty resulted from an incident on December 9, 2013, when two Queensland inspectors from the then Building Construction Compliance Branch visited the $53 million Arena Apartments site in South Brisbane.
