With a Commission of Inquiry to be headed by an Interstate Supreme Court Judge
You will remember I wrote to you a couple of weeks ago regarding my online e-petition seeking signatures supporting the sacking of the Chair of the Crime and Corruption Commissioner, Mr Alan MacSporran QC. The e-petition received over 640 signatures. Mr MacSporran resigned the day after a journalist advised him of this significant number of signatures. Thank you to those who lodged their signatures.
Now I am focussing on the recently announced “review” of the QBCC headed by a former senior Queensland bureaucrat and property developer, Mr Jim Varghese. The terms of reference for the review are wholly inappropriate and designed to exclude any semblance of scrutiny of the QBCC or the systemic mismanagement that has caused so much pain to so many Queenslanders.
I am particularly concerned the review fails to consider compensation for the financial and mental trauma victims of the QBCC have suffered. Further, I have allegations of criminal offences by QBCC officers and these too will avoid any scrutiny by the review. Inexplicably the CCC advised me to refer these criminal allegations back to the QBCC.
We need to ensure we make a major effort to send a clear message to the Government that the review is a dishonest attempt to minimise the political damage a wider inquiry would uncover.
Here’s your opportunity to lodge your protest and demand a wide public inquiry into the QBCC headed by an interstate supreme court judge with terms of reference that include powers to recommend compensation for QBCC victims and referral of any QBCC officers to the police who have breached the Queensland Criminal Code (1899).
I urge you to sign the e-petition (posted today on the Parliament website) and pass on the links (below) to anyone you think will support the cancellation of the Government’s “review” of the QBCC and substitute it with a Commission of Inquiry that addresses the real issues suffered by the victims of the QBCC.
